B’nai Brith Canada Condemns Antisemitic Remarks by Malaysian PM

Asks Canada to Recall High Commissioner for Consultations

Ottawa, October 16, 2003

For Immediate Release

Ottawa — B’nai Brith Canada today condemned antisemitic statements made by Malaysian Prime Minister Mahathir Mohamad in a speech to delegates attending the Organization of the Islamic Conference summit in Malaysia, and called on Foreign Affairs Minister Bill Graham to recall Canada’s High Commissioner to Malaysia for consultations.

In a letter to the Malaysian High Commissioner to Canada Dennis Ignatius, B’nai Brith Canada President Rochelle Wilner called Mohamad’s remarks “hateful” and “unacceptable”.

“We ask that you convey to your government the deep shock and anger that your Prime Minister’s statements have provoked,” the communication read.

In a separate letter to Bill Graham, Wilner asked that Canada issue its own statement condemning the remarks and asked that Canada’s High Commissioner to Malaysia be recalled for “consultations as a tangible token of (this country’s) displeasure”.
