Toronto, October 7, 2003… B’nai Brith Canada issued the following statement upon learning of the death of Israel Asper, founder and chairman of CanWest Global Communications Ltd.

“We are deeply shocked and saddened to learn of the untimely passing of Israel Asper,” said Rochelle Wilner, National President of B’nai Brith Canada. “Mr. Asper was a highly respected member of B’nai Brith Canada’s National Advisory Board and a past B’nai Brith Award of Merit recipient. He was a pillar, not just of Winnipeg’s Jewish community, but of the City of Winnipeg as a whole. Our prayers go out to his wife, Babs, and his children, David, Gail and Leonard.”

“Izzy was true friend” said Frank Dimant, Executive Vice President. “He was proud of his heritage and was tireless in standing up for the State of Israel, the Jewish homeland. He had the courage and integrity to stand by his convictions and was never afraid to articulate strong positions when necessary. Such a man will be sorely missed.”
