B’nai Brith Canada Denounces Deceptive Advertising

Calls on Mayor to Distance the City of Montreal from Exhibit

Montreal, September 25, 2003

For Immediate Release

Montreal — The Canada-Israel Public Affairs Committee, Quebec Region of B’nai Brith Canada today denounced the deceptive use of the City of Montreal logo on advertising promoting the exhibit by Artists Against the Occupation, an exhibit which entirely ignores the effects of terrorism in its inciteful attempt to paint Israel as solely responsible for the Middle-East conflict.

“This is clearly a cynical attempt to confer legitimacy on an unbalanced exhibit by deceptively presenting the City of Montreal as a sponsor of the event,” said Gerry Weiner, Director of Public Affairs for CIPAC, Quebec Region. “The reality is that the City of Montreal in no way endorsed or contributed to this exhibit directly, but only through their standard, annual contribution to sustain the MAI.”

CIPAC-Q sent a letter to Montreal Mayor Gerald Tremblay, calling on him to distance the City from the exhibit and publicly denounce the deceptive use of the City’s logo in the exhibit’s promotional material. The letter calls on the Mayor to “take immediate public action to distance the City of Montreal from this blatantly unbalanced incitement against Israel and the Jewish community and to denounce the cynical deception on the part of the exhibit’s promoters.”
