B’NAI BRITH CANADA BRIEFS UN RAPPORTEUR ON INCREASING ANTISEMITISM FACING QUEBEC JEWISH COMMUNITY

Montreal, September 17, 2003

For Immediate Release

Montreal, September 17, 2003… B’nai Brith Canada officials met today with Mr. Doudou Diene, United Nations Special Rapporteur on Racism, Racial Discrimination and Xenophobia, to discuss a number of issues of specific concern to Quebec’s Jewish community.

Representing B’nai Brith were Professor Stephen Scheinberg, National Director of the organization’s League for Human Rights, and Yoni Petel, the organization’s Community Outreach Coordinator.

The B’nai Brith brief outlined the importation into Canada of hate propaganda from the Middle East, which has led to increasing antisemitism in many sectors of Quebec society, particularly on campuses such as Concordia.

“We wanted Mr. Diene to appreciate the harmful effects of such propaganda on Canadian society and understand the intersectionality between anti-Zionism and antisemitism,” the B’nai Brith brief stated.
