For Immediate Release
Toronto, August 27, 2003 Bnai Brith welcomes todays decision by a British Columbia Supreme Court judge to extradite Michael Seifert to Italy, where he will serve a life sentence for Nazi-era war crimes.
Seifert was convicted in 2000 by an Italian military tribunal and sentenced in absentia for wartime atrocities as an SS guard in Bolzano, a Nazi concentration camp. Seifert hid his past when he applied to immigrate to Canada in 1951. It was only last May that the RCMP acted on the Italian extradition warrant and the long anticipated arrest finally took place. Todays decision marks the end of a long battle to bring Seifert to justice.
