Toronto, July 17, 2003

For Immediate Release

Toronto, July 17th, 2003 … In special ceremonies in Toronto and Winnipeg, B’nai Brith Canada will commemorate the ninth anniversary of the July 18th, 1994 bombing of the Jewish Community Centre (AMIA) in Buenos Aires in which 85 people were killed and 300 were injured. Argentina’s Jewish community has renewed calls for a thorough investigation and final resolution of the matter. B’nai Brith Canada today continues to demand that the perpetrators, the sponsors, and the protectors of those who perpetrated this heinous terrorist act be found and punished.

Rochelle Wilner, President of B’nai Brith Canada commented: “The government of Canada must use the influence it has in the Western Hemisphere to pressure the Argentine government to finally do the thorough investigation that this crime demands. The blood of the victims cries out for justice. As Canada pursues justice elsewhere in the world, so too should it demand justice here.”

Frank Dimant, Executive Vice President, stated: “The AMIA Jewish Centre Bombing and the 1992 Israeli Embassy bombing in Buenos Aires were a double blow to a from which the community that has never truly recovered. The Argentine Jewish community, engulfed with the rest of the country in dire economic straits, nevertheless continues to demand answers from their government over its inaction. Iran has been accused of directing the terrorist attacks in Argentina. Evidence of the ruthlessness of the Iranian government is unfortunately currently splashed across the front pages of our newspapers in the Kazemi case. If their fingerprints are on this the AMIA atrocity as well, then our government must hold them fully accountable.”
