Toronto, June 25, 2003

For Immediate Release

Toronto — B’nai Brith Canada today applauded the passage of legislation enabling the Ontario Government to implement the Equity in Education Tax Credit.

“Despite partisan opposition, Premier Eves refused to break his promise to B’nai Brith and to Ontario’s Jewish and Christian families. For this, we thank him,” said Rochelle Wilner, President of B’nai Brith Canada. “We particularly want to thank Jim Flaherty who first introduced the Bill, Tina Molinari, David Turnbull and David Young for all of their efforts, and especially Monte Kwinter who broke ranks with his Liberal colleagues on this important question of principal and voted in favour of the legislation.”

Mr. Kwinter’s vote was greeted by a standing ovation from members of the government. Absent from the legislature was Liberal MPP David Caplan.

“The EETC, once fully implemented, will finally put an end to the unfair practice of double-taxing parents who choose to give their children a Jewish education, especially those who can least afford it” added Frank Dimant, Executive Vice–President of B’nai Brith. “Premier Eves and his government are to be commended for their courage in seeing this through.”

Rabbi Yisroel Janowski, past and founding President of the Ontario Association of Jewish Day Schools agreed. “We are extremely grateful that the government has come through on this promise. It will benefit Jewish children tremendously.”
