For Immediate Release
Ottawa, May 13, 2003 Bnai Brith Canada has put JumpTV on notice that it will be held responsible if it broadcasts hate material, even if that content originates elsewhere. This caution was delivered in a letter to CEO Farrel Miller in response to news that the Montreal-based internet broadcaster had begun transmitting al-Jazeera.
Rochelle Wilner, National President of Bnai Brith Canada, stated: Bnai Brith Canada has had years of experience in dealing with hate on the internet, working together with government and community agencies, Internet Service Providers and legal/legislative experts. There are ways of ensuring coverage that meets the needs of ethnic communities without contravening Canadian anti-hate laws.
Frank Dimant, Executive Vice President, commented: All carriers, whether internet, cable or satellite, have an obligation to ensure that they are not used to disseminate hate material. If they do not take this responsibility seriously, Bnai Brith Canada will explore all available legal remedies to counter the dissemination of hate propaganda in this country.
