HUMAN RIGHTS GROUP CONCERNED BY ELSIE WAYNE’S COMMENTS

Toronto, May 9, 2003

For Immediate Release

Toronto, May 9, 2003… The League for Human Rights of B’nai Brith Canada has expressed concern over the unfortunate remarks made by MP Elsie Wayne about the activities of the Gay and Lesbian community.

Professor Stephen Scheinberg, National Chair of the League, stated:

“These remarks were inappropriate and failed to take into account the sensitivities of the Gay and Lesbian community. We call upon the MP to refrain from making such statements.

The Progressive Conservative Party has been known for promoting diversity in Canada, not only on the basis of sexual orientation, but also with regard to other protected grounds, such as gender, disability, and race. Wayne’s comments were a regrettable departure from this record of tolerance.”
