League for Human Rights comdemns act of hatred against Muslims and Arabs

Montreal, April 9, 2003

For Immediate Release

Montreal, April 9th, 2003… The League for Human Rights of B’nai Brith Canada has condemned the recent anti-Arab graffiti scrawled on the property of Muslim Schools of Montreal.

Professor Stephen Scheinberg, National Chair of the League, stated: “Any expression of hatred of this sort is one too many and it needs to be very seriously condemned at the highest levels of authority. These acts of intolerance affect every Canadian of every religious and ethnic background.”

B’nai Brith has offered to share its expertise in combating racism and prejudice with Muslim Schools of Montreal through the League’s Taking Action Against Hate program. This program is designed to train vulnerable minority groups so that they will be able to combat racial and religious intolerance.

Professor Scheinberg added: “Given the League’s recent release of its 2002 Audit of Antisemitic Incidents, in which 89 incidents of antisemitism were recorded in Quebec, including violence, threats, and vandalism, B’nai Brith understands only too well the insidious nature of the graffiti targeting the Muslim Schools of Montreal.”
