For Immediate Release
Toronto, April 2, 2003 Bnai Brith has extended its thanks to the Minister of Citizenship and Immigration, the Honourable Denis Coderre, this day after his announcement in the House that he has reviewed his initial refusal to exercise his ministerial discretion and will now be instructing his staff to take the necessary steps to permit Holocaust survivor Helen Ann Dougherty to remain in Canada while applying for a permanent residency visa.
Frank Dimant, Executive Vice President of Bnai Brith Canada, stated in his letter to the Minister: On behalf of the family of Helen Ann Dougherty, whom we have been working closely with, we at Bnai Brith Canada wish to thank you for your willingness to review your initial decision on this matter, as you have stated in the House of Commons this very afternoon. The compassion you have shown this woman by allowing her to now apply for a permanent visa while remaining in Canada, where she can have the support of her family, is much appreciated by the Jewish community and indeed all Canadians who are proud of Canadas humanitarian tradition.
