Cases of Alzheimer’s Disease expected to dramatically rise; B’nai Brith steps up to the plate by building free-standing Alzheimer’s care facility
TORONTO, March 4, 2010 – As reports indicate that Canadians will witness a dramatic increase in the number of people diagnosed with Alzheimer’s Disease in the coming years, B’nai Brith Canada has stepped up to the plate and is in the process of building a free-standing Alzheimer’s care facility. The B’nai Brith Canada Alzheimer’s Complex will be a state-of-the-art 43-bedroom residence and will be managed by professional staff. Research is also underway to establish a Parkinson’s/Alzheimer’s wing within the facility. The facility is being built at 1 Kenton in North York on land donated by the late David Sud and his wife Martha.
“According to the Rising Tide report released in January by the Alzheimer's Society of Ontario, there will be a significant rise in Alzheimer’s in the next 30 years,” said Kathy Hickman, Education Manager of the Alzheimer's Society of Ontario. “By the year 2038, it is expected that there will be 1,125,000 people with Alzheimer's or related dementia in Canada, with 257,800 new cases each year. That's one new case every two minutes.
“Aside from the social and emotional impact on the individual and the family, we're looking at a total of about $870 billion a year in terms of total economic costs, as opposed to $14 billion now. That's a huge jump."
“B’nai Brith understands the critical need for care that exists for Alzheimer’s patients and their families,” said Joe Bogoroch, President of B’nai Brith Canada. “We sincerely hope that our facility will provide its future residents with dignity, independence, and loving care. And it is for that reason that we have launched a $6 million capital fund to which we hope people in the community will contribute so we can all work together in making this project a real success.”
