‘Message of deterrence reflected in sentence handed down in case of Montreal firebomber,’ says B’nai Brith-Quebec Region
MONTREAL, February 12, 2009 – B’nai Brith Canada-Quebec Region has expressed its satisfaction with the seven-year sentence that Omar Bulphred received earlier today. Bulphred pled guilty to the firebombing of Jewish institutions in Montreal.
“Omar Bulphred has pled guilty to a series of firebombings targeting the Jewish community. However, his guilty plea coming so long after his initial arrest in 2007, in no way excuses the seriousness of the offence and its impact on the community,” said Allan Adel, National Chair of the League for Human Rights of B’nai Brith Canada.
“During the sentencing hearing of Bulphred’s co-conspirator Azim Ibragimov, we heard Judge Gilles Cadieux refer to these crimes as terrorist acts and advise the Court of its obligation to denounce them. We are satisfied that the judge in Bulphred’s case meted out a sentence that captures the seriousness of his offences, which had the potential to bring about devastating human consequences.
“The justice system has sent a clear message of deterrence, which is especially needed against the backdrop of ongoing threats to the safety and security of the Jewish community, both in Quebec and across the country.”
