‘Award to PM Harper by major American Jewish organization most deserving honour,’ says B’nai Brith Canada
TORONTO, December 4, 2008 – B’nai Brith Canada has conveyed its congratulations to Prime Minister Stephen Harper who will be honoured later today in New York with the International Leadership Award by the Conference of Presidents of Major American Jewish Organizations. This prestigious award, in recognition of the Prime Minister’s efforts to stand up for democratic Israel on the world stage, is being presented by the Conference of Presidents, the influential Jewish umbrella group representing 50 major religious, philanthropic and civic American Jewish organizations.
“This is a most deserving honour for Prime Minister Stephen Harper,” said Frank Dimant, Executive Vice President of B’nai Brith Canada. “The Prime Minister has consistently demonstrated his leadership on the world stage standing up for democratic Israel in its battle against terrorism.
“Canada has led by example, actively working to stem the anti-Israel tide at the United Nations and elsewhere. Under Prime Minister’s Harper’s leadership, Canada was the first country to pull out of Durban II, when early on it revealed itself to be nothing more than a platform for promoting hatred and bigotry. This Government has all too often been the lone voice at the UN Human Rights Council in Geneva to vote against blatantly anti-Israel resolutions. Canada continues to diligently work to improve Western relations with Israel.
“It is particularly fitting that Prime Minister Stephen Harper is the first world leader to receive this inaugural International Leadership Award.”
The ceremony will take place this evening where a Government Minister will be on-hand to receive the award on behalf of the Prime Minister. Confirmed guests include U.S. Congressmen, Government representatives, members of the diplomatic corps, and a broad spectrum of community leaders.
