TAKING ACTION AGAINST HATE

Youth Conference
International Human Rights Day
December 10, 2002

Youth Conference 2002

Welcome to our Youth Conference webpages! They were created in order to share with our delegates, other youth, educators and community organizations the results of the League's Taking Action Against Hate Youth Conference 2002. Check out these pages and don't forget to visit again. We'll keep updating the site as our Conference delegates report back to us on their progress as they start anti-hate initiatives in their own schools and communities!

Conference Goal

The League's Annual Audit of Antisemitic Incidents reported a rise in racist and antisemitic activity across the country over the last few years. This includes an increase in violence and an escalation of hate on the Internet. Hate groups specifically target young people who are seeking a sense of belonging and identity. At the same time, there have been significant cutbacks in school-based programs to counter racism and hate. Through the sharing of anti-hate techniques and by sending the message that hate will not be tolerated, we aimed to develop practical anti-hate skills among high school youth leaders and build community capacity to create safer, non-violent communities.

During the conference, the student delegates were asked to create a slogan or logo that would depict a positive anti-hate message. Below is the winning creation designed by
Thurkka Gnanalingam
, of East York Collegiate Institute.
Great job Thurkka!
