People tend to think of Estate Planning and/or Planned Giving as something that applies to the wealthy, and that they need not concern themselves with what they perceive are very complicated procedures. Nonetheless, in todays society, when people combine house values, potential life-insurance proceeds, pension plan benefits and other income sources, its surprising how quickly one can reach the threshold where Estate Planning is advisable. Planned Giving is a very special form of charitable giving that can provide the donor with important tax, and other financial benefits. Everyone truly owes it to his or her loved ones and to themselves to examine their situation in light of the present tax laws. The various options include: Charitable Gift Annuities, Publicly Traded Securities, Bequests, Charitable Remainder Trusts, Life Insurance, etc.
In the past, The Bnai Brith Foundation has hosted a number of successful Brunches for a select group of Bnai Brith members who were interested in exploring various estate planning options. These sessions, were addressed by Jerry White, host of Money Talks, Family Fortune, and Personal Wealth on CFRB and the author of over 40 books on financial planning. In Toronto, Mr. White was joined by Joel Cuperfain LL.B., Tax and Planning Group, Manulife Financial, and Chair of the Bnai Brith Foundations Planned Giving Program. In very informative and stimulating presentations, they offered their expertise and insights on ways to increase wealth and minimize taxes, as well as citing benefits that could accrue from Estate Planning. If you are interested in attending our next session in order to learn how you might increase your personal wealth, please contact Hyla Reichmann at (416) 633-6224, ext. 128. or via e-mail at: hreichmann@bnaibrith.ca.
There are many ways you can make a gift to the Bnai Brith Foundation.
The following presents you with various options and vehicles for donations.
The most popular method of supporting the Foundation is through a gift of cash. Cash gifts provide the Bnai Brith Foundation with immediate support. Under recently announced changes to the Income Tax Act, you can claim a tax credit in respect of gifts up to 75% of your net income; excess amounts can be carried forward for up to five years.
A charitable life income annuity can provide you with an income stream for life and provide a current gift to the Bnai Brith Foundation. There are a variety of tax effective structures that can be undertaken using charitable annuities.
As a result of recently announced tax incentives, gifts of publicly traded securities are quickly becoming a popular and attractive method of making a gift to the Bnai Brith Foundation. Under the 1997 federal budget, the capital gains tax on gifts of publicly traded securities has been cut in half. In addition, you will receive a charitable receipt for the full fair market value of the gift.
You may wish to gift property other than publicly traded securities to the Bnai Brith Foundation. The Foundation is pleased to receive gifts of real estate, works of art, other personal property and interests in trusts. You will receive a charitable tax receipt for the full fair market value of the gifted property. The Bnai Brith Foundation may retain the gift or use the cash proceeds derived thereof.
You can make a gift to the Bnai Brith Foundation through your will. A bequest is simply a direction in your will to pay a certain amount to the Bnai Brith Foundation. Your estate will receive a tax receipt for the full value of the bequest which can be used to reduce the tax payable on your final tax return. You can claim a tax credit on your final return for charitable gifts up to 100% of your net income on your final tax return; excess amounts can be carried back to the previous year.
You can establish a trust for your assets, continue to receive the income from the assets as long as you live and get an immediate tax benefit. The assets pass to the Foundation upon your passing.
A gift of life insurance is a way of making a larger gift than you may have otherwise thought possible without encroaching on estate assets. You could either gift an existing policy to the Bnai Brith Foundation, or take out a new policy and name the Bnai Brith Foundation as owner and beneficiary. If you gift an existing policy, the Bnai Brith Foundation will issue you a charitable tax receipt for the amount of the policys cash surrender value.
Whether you gift an existing policy or take out a new policy, the Bnai Brith Foundation will issue you a charitable tax receipt for any future premium payments you make with respect to the policy.
You may also gift the proceeds of a life insurance policy, which you own, to the Bnai Brith Foundation. Such a gift will be treated as any other charitable bequest under your will.
The Bnai Brith Foundation gratefully acknowledges the generosity of all our donors. Our donor recognition program is designed to publicly acknowledge major donors.
The Bnai Brith Foundation will provide, at no cost, tax assistance for the structuring of your charitable gift. A team of experts is available to meet with you to provide guidance.
The Foundation annually embarks on a series of direct solicitation campaigns. Each of these campaigns is geared to particular sectors of the community with differing potential for giving. As part of this one-on-one solicitation, special attention is being directed to major donors, both individual and corporate. In addition, there is a special division raising funds which are being set aside in an endowment trust fund to generate resources for Bnai Brith Canadas future operations.
The Clothing Donation Programme has become a significant ongoing project of B’nai Brith Canada. Currently there are 36 sites, with the attractive green bins, located in the area bounded by Leslie Street, Dufferin Street, St. Clair Avenue and Richmond Hill. Items have been donated to such programs as “Out of the Cold”, numerous women’s shelters, Zareinu Educational Centre, natural disaster victims and immigrant families.

In 2002 Bnai Brith Continued its very successful Direct Mail Program. The generosity of the recipients continues to increase. Much of the success of the program can be attributed to the personal investment of the chairman, Howie Malach.
Each year, The Foundation mounts a variety of fundraising events in cities across Canada. These events, geared to the nature of the local community, can take the form of entertainment evenings, golf tournaments, auctions, bazaars, etc.
